And I know I shouldnt what with the shitty reliability, which is kind of spotty weirdly. Some places you’ll see things where people have had little to no problems, others people have had a myriad of problems. And with how cheap they get because of that sweet sweet depreciation they are hard to ignore. I just think they are a great family car. And watching Harry’s Garage for some reason makes me want one more.

Do you guys like them? Im looking at some online that I might go check out later. What problems do they have mainly?

Not sure on problems but I would think the experience wouldn’t be that different than what Doug had with his RR.

Like you though I think they are great looking vehicles and would probably be a joy to own except for when the time comes and it needs to go to the shop.

I always felt like the RRS was just an LR4 stuffed into a smaller suit. I don’t dislike them, but why not just get an LR4?

I used to hate them but then I found out that they’re Discovery 3s underneath and for reasons I don’t understand they became my favourite Land Rover. I would love to have one with the supercharged 4.2.

The first gen RRS is built on the Discovery/LR3 chassis, so you’re pretty close.

Which is why I want to try to find one that was actually taken care of by the previous owner(s). But this is one of those “ball on a budget” cars that get sold a lot at buy here pay here places. So high mileage ones that were just beaten to shit are plentiful sadly.

Thats what I mean, its got all the lard of the LR3/4 but non of the space, the interiors aren’t actually that roomy for their size. Plus that dash higher than the windscreen thing always bugged me.

Thats a good point. But Ive never really cared for how the LR4 looked or drove. Its a little too top heavy for me.

Always hated the RRS cause I felt like it compromised too much for what it is. There’s nothing sporty about it and it’s just a smaller RR with less features. If you’re buying a Range Rover go for the fancy Ford Explorer or LR4 or bust.

Pretty much similar issues to the Discovery 3 as they share the same platform, look for an ‘08 and up so you get the stronger rear diff.

I dont know why this didnt even cross my mind. The only sucky part is that for that Carmax quality, Ill be dealer with prices higher then literally everywhere else, even namebrand dealers that got some in on trade.

But is the reliability that bad anymore? I mean on the newer models.

I think Land Rovers are nice and all, and I see a lot of them around. I just have never understood their special appeal over other luxury SUVs with similar specs. Can somebody explain to me?

Yea I was looking for 11 and up but 08 would be the lowest I would go. Its crazy you can get an 06 for under 10 grand if you look hard enough and can deal with high ass miles.

I dont think the relibility is bad anymore on the newer models. At the same time though it could be we havent heard anything yet since a lot of the new models are still on 1st and second owners or are under warranty still.

The appeal to me though is the British-ness of the things. They are unique in that and have quirks a lot of the time that you can deal with if you feel like it. Its a weird attraction I know.

A close second to the Sport Supercharged in Marmaris Teal with these wheels.

With how cheap these things are a lot of places, you dont need to sell a kidney. You can go sell plasma.

I love these. Understand they’re an unnecessary sacrifice of utility for the sake of style..i.e you could have a more usable LR3, that is the same car. But this thing looks so much better – and to me, it has more than the space I could ever need. And given the depreciation if a nice example comes up at a good price with a warranty (CarMax or something like that) I’d consider it. But then again resale is going to be horrendous – so either gotta budget that in and be OK with it, or plan to keep it forever…which is a daunting prospect.

I had an LR3 and honestly loved it. I did dump thousands into it repairing things that in my opinion should not go bad, but it was still the most comfortable highway vehicle I’ve ever owned, and very capable off road and in blizzards. I honestly can’t stop myself from looking at them and the LR4s. Its a sickness.

Kinja'd!!! WiscoProud > LJ909
09/12/2017 at 13:55

I would get one based on the LR4 platform. The LR3 was a huge jump in reliability from the Disco 2, and the LR4 was another jump from the LR3.

Normal things, $1,000 brake jobs, replace wiring harness due to plugged sunroof vent, bad seal on front diff making me replace it (you can just fix the seal now), bushings all going bad at 100k, Bad battery making you think the world is going to end, and I think my compressor was starting to fail when I sold it.

I’ve stupidly been looking at these, LR3's, and older ones, like D2's and P38's. Used to have a P38 and it was freaking awesome, but I just couldn’t trust it.

But carrying my bike on the E55 isn’t fun. Switching cars with the wife isn’t fun. Can’t take the 55 on forest service roads. Blah.

Maybe the solution is to lift the 55 and put AT’s on it and build some skid plates!

Significant other wants a second gen. Seems reliable enough. I think I can find 2nd gens with coil suspension vs air (if not I’m converting). Throw some smaller dia wheels, take it off road every once in a while, be able to buy a beater and tow it home. That’s my plan anyway.

One of the main car mags has a RR Diesel as a long-termer. Buggy electronics (like the all-LCD instrument cluster just turning itself off at 80mph) are still the order of the day. They’re better than the older models, but are still far from cured.

Partly that was Chicago pricing, and me not having a garage. From what I understand its a relatively simple job, but I was living in a condo and had no where to do it. Each time I did it, they replaced the rotors as well, which still seems odd to me, I can’t believe rotors have the same life as pads, but it seems common on these.

Lol yeah but mine had black steelies with AT’s and a 2" lift on coils.

You shut your mouth. Owning an Audi would be blasphemous. And they’re less trustworthy than a P38. I have no intentions of getting rid of the 55, unless someone wants to give me a stupid amount of money for it.

First time was a dealership, the others were at indys. Mind you I had a 2006 back in 2008-2012. Parts prices and availability are much better now. Currently you can get a full brake kit from Atlantic British for $390. Give a few hours to a shop, with shop mark-up on prices and you’re pretty easily looking at $800+. I just didn’t have anywhere to do it, so I was stuck. Not to mention OEM was about the only source of the parts for a while there.

True, but you get a car that has already been through CarMax’s inspection and refurbishment, so it means it made financial sense to put it through that effort AND offer warranties for it. Few of the first-gen RRS are even CPO-worthy anymore, so JLR dealers aren’t going to put much stock behind them, if any at all.
